"The test of a governmental theory or program is how well it WORKS, not how nice it sounds or how magnanimous it makes the believer feel." The immigration bill of 1986 did not work. The comprehensive immigration bill just defeated in the Senate had no chance of working. The conservative base rose up and made the calls, sent the e-mails, wrote the letters and demanded that the bill was a loser. The talk radio hosts, saw through the rhetoric and exposed the bill for what it was. Amnesty. We appreciate the conservatives that listened to the base, to the grass roots and voted against that monstrosity. Thank You, We do remember those things when it comes to reelection.
So to the republicans in office, you can consider the mobilization of the base as a test. Go back to the roots of conservativism. Stand the ground. It's time to return to the days of yesteryear, the Reagan conservativeness. "The Republican Party is in a crisis right now. It is not due to the Democrats taking over control of Congress. It has to do with losing the vision of conservatism."
"If anything, Republicans lost Congress because they have lost the vision of political conservatism that Ronald Reagan brought to this country. They have allowed themselves to be cowed by the sheer amount of noise that the left has generated in attacking conservative principles. This wall of noise has fooled Republican leadership into thinking that conservatism is not popular in America, that the people want liberalism." writes John Eberhard, in an excellent article on the subject of The conservative Vision.
It's worth the read.
