50 years ago, a Plymouth Belvedere was buried.

As part of the Tulsa, Oklahoma centenial celebration back in 1957, a brand new Plymouth Belevedere Sport Coupe was buried in a vacumn bag inside a concrete vault sunk into the earth on the court house lawn.   There it has been for 50 years.

Today is the day to bring it up, empty the contents of the glove compartment and award the car to the person who, back in 1957 guessed what the population of Tulsa would be  in 2007.   That person could very well be alive and well and have a brand new car to drive home, well, a not driven possibly rusted out somewhat of a classic old car.

Today it is raining.  Thunderstorms rolling across the state into Tulsa as I write.

Yesterday, the vault was opened and the car was raised as a practice run for todays official event.  And three feet of water was in the vault, seeped through cracks in the concrete over the past 5 decades.   The plastic vacumn bag was not opened, so the condition of the car is still not known.  What kind of plastic was availabe way back then in the 50's?   Were there any holes in the bag?   It's being hyped by the media.  There are tickets to sell for the bleachers to witness this historic event.

Is it or isn't it all rusted out?

The official time of the "unbagging" of the car is for 7pm this evening.
