This is not
the first attempt or thought of raising taxes to force consumers like
you and me, the regular people out here all across the land to become
aware of the possible calamity of a possible global warming nightmare,
and to pay for the bigger government bureaucracy needed to sort all of
this stuff out.
“House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell
(D-Mich.) will propose a new carbon tax that would increase the
gasoline tax by 50 cents, the lawmaker said in an interview on C-SPAN’s
‘Newsmakers’ airing Sunday.” The Hill Report.
“In addition to raising the gasoline tax, Dingell’s new proposal
would institute a “double digit” tax on each ton of carbon dioxide
emitted.”
And Al Gore said, Amen and Amen brother.
Let’s see, If you drive 15,000 miles a year and get 25 miles to a
gallon, you would consume 600 gallons of gas, so $300 a year per
vehicle is really not all that much, is it. Wikipedia reports that in
2004 there were 243,023,485 registered vehicles in the US. Since some
are going to be driven a lot less and some will have dramatically
larger miles, for the sake of argument, assume that they each drove
15,000 miles a year. Therefore using the same formulas as above, the
federal government would take in a whopping $70.2 billion. But, of
course, there would be a cut back by consumers as most of us would
voluntarily reduce our driving, therefore reducing the gas usage,
therefore reducing the total gas sold, therefore reducing the number of
gas stations as some would go out of business, therefore reducing the
number of people working, therefore reducing the number of cars on the
road, therefore reducing the taxes coming in from other
sources, therefore the need to increase taxes in other areas, therefore
reducing the number of people working in the auto and oil
industry, therefore increasing the need for more incentives for the
consumers to buy cars and more taxes, therefore reducing the number of
everything sold, therefore reducing the number of people working in the
stores and the manufacturing plants, therefore reducing the amount
of higher-end groceries sold, therefore reducing the number of farmers,
reducing the need for migrant illegal Mexican workers.
Wow, that’s an amazing way to reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country.
